Geopolitics, cybersecurity and sustainability are important issues when it comes to the rollout of information and communication technologies in the Pacific region. This presentation explores these issues through examination of undersea internet cables.

Undersea internet cables increase capacity and assumptions are often made about their potential positive impacts on uptake, pricing, speeds and reliability. This presentation: introduces the undersea internet cables in the Pacific region; outlines ongoing research regarding mobile internet pricing and speeds and presents results to date; and considers questions related to sustainability, cybersecurity and geopolitics.
