Richard Eves has just returned from five weeks in Papua New Guinea, where he undertook fieldwork as part of the project, Do No Harm: Understanding the Relationship Between Women’s Economic Empowerment and Violence Against Women in Melanesia, a collaboration between SSGM and the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA). Richard supervised the team of three researchers from Bougainville — Steven Simiha, Irene Subalik and Genevieve Kouro, all of whom attended SSGM’s Pacific Research Colloquium earlier in the year.
The team visited Jiwaka, Chimbu, Eastern Highlands Provinces and Port Moresby, to interview women and men about how income was managed in the family and whether disagreements over this resulted in violence. The team completed over two hundred interviews, including one hundred with women. Findings from the comprehensive fieldwork conducted under the Do No Harm research project will be presented in a number of research publications over the next twelve months.
